The Jersey Central Chapter sponsors a scholarship, in honor of long time member Homer Hill who passed away September, 2000, for one child, boy or girl, who would like to attend one of the two sessions of the NRHS/National Park Services Railcamp at Steamtown National Historic Site, in Scranton PA. JCRHS has reserved a slot during the upcoming session. This is an introductory session. An Intermediate Railcamp session will also be held during the summer and is only open to those who have attended a previous Railcamp. Railcamp is designed to give the next generation of railfans a background in rail history interpretation, the techniques of rail heritage preservation and restoration as well as railroad operations and career opportunities in the rail industry. It is open to children who will be entering the 9th grade in this September through students who have just graduated 12th grade in June.
In addition to NRHS eligibility, our scholarship will be awarded first to a member's dependant, then to a child nominated by a member, then lastly to a child from our geographic region nominated by an associated railfan organization.
The scholarship will pay the tuition of $750.00, which includes meals and lodging at nearby Scranton University but will NOT cover transportation to and from Steamtown. Scranton University is within walking distance of Steamtown.
How to Apply: A form is available for the applicant and sponsor to complete, with additional details of the Railcamp agenda. The form must be submitted to the committee by April 15. Application forms and detailed information will be available at the March and April Chapter meetings or can be obtained by calling Gene Milgram on the chapter hotline at (908) 233-3603. This is a great opportunity for young railfan to have a unique "hands-on" learning experience.
The Homer Hill Scholarship Committee includes Gene Milgram and Mitch Dakelman. Please call the JCRHS Hotline at (908) 233-3603 to request additional information.
In the past, the Jersey Central Chapter has selected numerous candidates, all who have had a once in a life time experience. One camper had such a wonderful time, he has become a Steamtown volunteer so he can continue to enjoy the experience.
Past Railcamps have been a resounding success and this year's sessions should prove to be even better!
